House panel to probe scholarship scam

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD JULY 19. The Government today agreed to constitute a House Committee to probe the scholarship scam in the Social Welfare Department. Announcing this in the Assembly, the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, said the Government was honestly attempting to expose the fraud and scamsters. Alongside, an action plan in the shape of a comprehensive Government Order had been prepared to streamline the procedures in the departments concerned in an integrated manner to plug loopholes, he said.

Earlier, the Opposition demanded a House Committee probe to get to the root of the scam. The fact that Mr. Naidu wanted the probe to be extended to other districts, too, was signal enough that there might be more to it than what meets the eye, opposition members contended.

Ruling out any nexus between those involved in the scam and ruling party leaders, Mr. Naidu said the Government would not tolerate corruption at any level.
