Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your editorial, "Not an uplifting choice" (July17), has rightly condemned the BJP's partisanship in selecting people for high Constitutional office. The selection of B.S. Shekhawat as its Vice-Presidential candidate clearly shows that the BJP has bowed to the dictates of the Sangh Parivar. Unfortunately, a golden opportunity to select a person above party politics has been lost. Instead of selecting a person by consensus, the BJP wanted to exercise its authority to select its own candidate after it was able to secure the support of its key allies the BSP and the Telugu Desam. Moreover, with the unexpected support from the AIADMK, it can be assured of victory for its candidate. However, blaming the BJP alone for having politicised the constitutional offices may not be correct. This was started by the Congress and is being followed by all political parties.
