Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your editorial "A bright initiative" (July18) is supportive of the Centre's move to appoint the former Union Law Minister, Arun Jaitley, as interlocutor for discussing the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir. First, the move to give autonomy or more powers is ill-conceived. It shows the mentality in us to cajole J&K to stay with us. This flies in the face of the fact that J&K is an integral part of our country and we should not be placating and cajoling it to stay with us. This reveals that deep in our mind we are not able to see J&K as part of our country. The only silver lining in the initiative is that, it is taken in the run-up to the Assembly elections in J&K and so there are bright chances that this initiative could only be a ceremonial one to give some campaigning fodder to the National Conference for the upcoming elections. What J&K needs today is proper governance and ruthless handling of terrorism and insurgency, rather than autonomy or more powers. M.D. Ravikanth Kanchipuram, T.N.
