Threat to unity

Sir, — The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is quite right in calling as dangerous the Vanniyar Sangam resolution passed at its "Right to Live" conclave at Uthiramerur in Chengalpattu district on July 18. The resolution portends a call for Vanniyar Nadu affecting the unity and integrity of the country. The PMK chief, Ramadoss should remember the fate of the call for Dravidanadu for Tamils by the disciples of `Periyar' E.V. Ramasami in the early Fifties of the last century. The Vanniyar Sangam is quite off the mark when it says Vanniyars get unrepresented at Fort St.George (seat of power). Every political party in Tamil Nadu has Vanniyar leaders. The DMK always gives ticket to Vanniyars in the Vanniyar constituency and a chunk of Ministership goes to them regularly. Even during the Congress regime there were Vanniyar Ministers with Cabinet rank.

Instead of wasting its energy in giving such anti-integration calls, the PMK should seek methods to capture power in Pondicherry first and go to the people with a clear agenda for the uplift of Vanniyars.

A.Subramanian,

Rajapalayam, T.N.
