`Expedite efforts to involve farmers under crop insurance scheme'

By Our Staff Correspondent

Belgaum July 21. The Bharat Krishik Samaj, Belgaum District unit, has urged the Government to expedite efforts to involve farmers under the Crop Insurance Scheme for 2002-03.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, the Secretary of the samaj, Lingraj Patil, said the number of farmers opting for the scheme in the district was less than that of the previous year.

More than 33,000 farmers were covered under the scheme last year, he said and added that the present figure was less than half of that number.

The last date for paying premiums was July 30, he added.

Mr. Patil said the Krishik Samaj had ensured distribution of forms at all villages.

Most farmers were not opting for the scheme due to lack of awareness on the scheme among them.

The youth organisations and NGOs in rural areas had been requested to pursue farmers, particularly those with small and marginal holdings, to enrol themselves under the scheme, he said. The village accountants could play significant role in persuading them to enrol under the scheme.

The Agriculture Minister, V.S.Koujalgi, should take the matter seriously in the interest of farmers, he said.

The Joint Director, Department of Agriculture, L.N. Belvanki, said 33,501 farmers insured their crop for Rs. 11 crore in the previous financial year. They had contributed Rs. 25 lakh as premium.

As on date, 19,420 farmers got the benefit of the scheme. Of the Rs.2.98 crore released, Rs.2.63 crore had been distributed, he said.

The Agriculture Department was ready with information regarding the scheme, including on threshold levels in respect of each crop and the amount of premiums to be paid for insuring each crop, Mr. L.N. Belvanki said.
