Rai to boost transport

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE July 21. The Transport Minister, B.Ramanath Rai, has said that he will work for improving the transport services in the State. He was felicitated by the D.K. Bus Owners' Association and the Canara Bus Owners' Association here on Sunday. "I will work beyond the expectation of the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna," he said.

Mr. Rai said he would accord equal importance for the development of KSRTC and private bus services. He also called upon the bus owners' associations in the district to consider providing identity passes to journalists to enable them to use the private bus services free of cost. The district was a major revenue earner for the State, he said.

The Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmastala, D.Veerendra Heggade, who presided over the function, said the district had contributed immensely for the development of various sectors. The "charaka", which was a symbol of movement and success, would go to those individuals who knew how to modify according to the change, he said. Stating that the competition between the private and the public sectors had proved to be beneficial for the consumers, he said a similar competition in the transport sector would benefit the consumers and help improve services to a large extent.

The Mangalore MLA, N.Yogish Bhat, called upon the minister to consider modifying the present policy of awarding contract for spares to benefit the automobile spare manufacturing units in the State. The present policy had allowed the KSRTC to shop for a majority of its spares in Pondicherry.
