35 nations condemn attack

United Nations July 25. In a rare show of unanimous anger, representatives of about 35 countries strongly condemned the Israeli missile attack that killed a wanted Hamas leader and 14 others as unacceptable and asked Tel Aviv to act within international humanitarian law.

Addressing a hastily summoned meeting of the Security Council, Arab ambassadors rejected the Israeli explanation that it was a mistake and demanded adoption of a resolution calling for withdrawal of Israel from occupied territories. The United States indicated that it did not favour another resolution, contending that previous resolutions were enough and stressed the need for ``constructive diplomatic efforts''. It also wanted the activities of Hamas and other Palestinian `terrorist' groups to be discussed. Fifteen people, including a Hamas leader and nine children, were killed in the attack on Monday.
