Make a beginning

Sir, — This refers to your report `The child and the President' (July 25). While it is true that child labour is rampant and several children are not going to school, a beginning has to be made if progress is to be achieved. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said ``Unless we dream, we cannot achieve''. We should give him a chance. For a positive and futuristic approach adopted by the media also would go a long way in helping our President achieve his aim.

Suraj Sundar,
Chennai * * * Sir, — The new President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has attracted different kinds of attention. Some talk about his hairstyle while others talk about his dress. We must allow the President to be himself. Why talk about Dr. Kalam's personal preferences and appearance? Leave the "apparel/appearance culture" to full-time politicians who want to look different on different occasions.

J. Egbert Samraj,
Secunderabad
