No response

Sir, — The myth of democracy! Five letters addressed relentlessly, but observing all decorum, to a Central Cabinet Minister, over the period November 1998 to February 2002, followed by one to the bureaucrat concerned in March, and a humble supplication made to the Honourable Chief Justice of India in February 2001, on a subject of crucial importance to the writer/supplicant, and a series of letters sent to senior police officers as well as the bureaucrat concerned of the Government of Tamil Nadu (in the latter case, repeated endeavours to get the officer on line too), regarding an undetected case of burglary of a serious magnitude to the victim, that happened in Chennai early 1998, have not drawn any response. One wonders how this kind of a state of affairs is persisting in this State, despite a Government Order reportedly issued in June 2001, stipulating, inter alia, that "receipt of petitions should be acknowledged within five days" and that "they should be disposed of within 90 daysat any cost."

A.N. Ganapathy,
Chennai
