Letters to the Editor
Sir, The stand taken by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on the invitation issue is justifiable. Invitations for any function are not to be sought; they are to be given. If the Home Ministry made a mistake, the right thing is to own it up and offer an unconditional apology. Instead, they opted to issue a clarification that the practice followed from 1950 is to send invitations to Governors, Chief Ministers and MPs who indicate a preference to be present. It should be realised that the Government is now being run by almost two-dozen parties with the active support of a few regional parties. However, the regret expressed by the Deputy Prime Minister is the right step.
