Change convention

Sir, — The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, has done the right thing by expressing regret to Jayalalithaa, even as the BJP president, Venkaiah Naidu, asked her not to make it a big issue. That is real leadership.

Conventions have to be changed to meet the changing situation. Inviting 100 school children to the swearing-in ceremony was a novelty. Ms. Jayalalithaa has done well in insisting on her rights.

C. Lakshmi Narain,
Chennai * * * Sir, — The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has said that by not inviting her to the swearing-in ceremony of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Centre has insulted her and the people of Tamil Nadu. She has chosen not to go to New Delhi to attend the funeral of Krishan Kant.

Does this mean that she and the people of Tamil Nadu have insulted the memory of the late Vice-President?

G.Viswanathan,
Secunderabad, A.P.
