Over 48 lakh people have been affected and standing crops in 3.23 lakh hectares destroyed. Floodwaters have entered 5,631 villages. As many as 294 relief camps have been opened and about 90,000 people have taken shelter in them. The Government has released Rs. 1.9 crores for relief. Speaking about the situation in Lakhimpur district, L. Phangso, deputy commissioner, said over the phone from north Lakhimpur that 56,000 sq.km area had been inundated, affecting over 2 lakh people. Six villages had been completely eroded by the Brahmaputra, while 140 villages were still under deep waters. Seven bridges had been destroyed and four embankments breached. A preliminary estimate of loss of property has been put at Rs. 2 crores, while crop loss is to the tune of Rs. 1.2 crores. So far, two deaths have been reported. Mr. Phangso said the State Government had released Rs. 15 lakhs for relief for the district.
