Australia cancels travel advisory

CANBERRA JULY 29 . Australia has joined the list of countries cancelling advice to avoid travel to India because of fears that the country was on the brink of war with Pakistan.

But the Foreign Office warned the Australians considering going there that tensions between India and Pakistan remained.

``Some progress has been made in reducing tensions but the situation remains unpredictable and could deteriorate,'' a Spokeswoman from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Reuters today.

Australia's Foreign Office said its advice not to travel to the border areas between India and Pakistan, or to Jammu and Kashmir still stood.

In May, the department joined about a dozen Western nations, including the United States and Britain, in recommending Australians defer all business and non-essential travel to India and any citizens living and working there leave the country.

The United States, Britain and Germany are among those who have now relaxed their advice over India.
