Letters to the Editor
Sir, Gen. Powell has opened a Pandora's box by asking India to allow international observers to monitor the elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He also remarked that Kashmir is on the international agenda. These statements were music to the ears of the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, while for India they reflected the real intentions of the U.S. If the U.S. is sincere about obliterating terrorism from South Asia, why does it not ask Pakistan to permanently dismantle the terrorist camps operating on the territory? The U.S. and the U.K. do not want to find a solution to the Kashmir issue as long as India and Pakistan remain profitable markets for their defence equipment.
