Letters to the Editor
Sir, Vijay Anand's resignation from the chairmanship of the Central Board of Film Certification is not surprising. Clearly, he did not want to toe the Government line. So he was replaced with Arvind Trivedi (who played the role of Ravan in the TV serial, Ramayan), who is a BJP member and will of course do what the Government wants. For over 50 years, the Government has maintained its hold on film censorship despite the Justice G.D. Khosla Committee recommendation for an entirely autonomous film censor board, which was passed as a Bill in 1974 but came to nought because of the Emergency. Mr. Anand suggested the introduction of a rating system instead of ordering cuts and the creation of rating for explicit films to be shown only at specified cinemas.
