Demand for Islamic law

JAKARTA aug. 3. At least 5,000 Indonesian Muslims — many of them women wearing headscarves and pushing babies in strollers — marched in downtown Jakarta on Saturday to demand that the nation's lawmakers impose traditional Islamic law.

Chanting ``There is no God but Allah,'' the crowd lifted their arms above their heads in prayer as they marched peacefully to the Parliament building, where legislators will debate whether to install `Sharia' law for the nation's Muslim majority.

The proposed constitutional amendment is not expected to receive widespread support in Parliament.
