Barua, Ramesh in joint lead

TORQUAY (ENGLAND) Aug. 3. Former national champion Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua moved into the joint lead after a remarkable victory against Simon Williams of England in the fifth round of the Smith and Williamson British Chess Championships here.

Another Indian to be placed in the joint lead was International Master R.B. Ramesh as he defeated John Emms. Sharing the lead with the Indians on four points were GM Jonathan Speelman, GM Peter Wells and IM Pert Nicholas.

As many as 14 players follow the five leaders with 3.5 points each to their credit including the top seed GM K. Sasikiran, GM P. Harikrishna, WGM Koneru Humpy and GM norm aspirant S.S. Ganguly.

Sandipan Chanda went down fighting against GM Jonathan Speelman. The game between archrivals and prodigies, Harikrishna and Humpy ended in a tame draw in just 21 moves. It was Sasikiran's third successive draw in the tournament.

Swati Ghate's quest for her second WGM norm continued as she held GM Neil McDonald to a draw. Swati has so far accumulated 2.5 points from five games and is in excellent contention for the coveted norm.
