Jammu & Kashmir
By Our Staff Reporter
Speaking to presspersons, the Inspector-General of Police, Jammu Range, Pitambar Lal Gupta, said police had achieved a major breakthrough by capturing the terrorist, Mohammed Abdullah alias Abu Talah, alive. (On Friday, police claimed to have gunned down the other terrorist after a combing operation in the Raika Batindi forests.) Disclosing the details of the operation, the officer said that the entire Raika forest area, into which the terrorists had fled after the carnage, had been surrounded and relentless searches carried out everyday. Abdullah surfaced around 4.30 a.m. from the forest, where police had retained a small force in plainclothes. After nabbing him, police disarmed him and recovered two hand grenades, a rifle and several rounds of ammunition. Mr. Gupta said that Abdullah belonged to the militant outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and hailed from Multan in Pakistan. He was trying to escape to Poonch. Abdullah, who is in his late teens, confessed that he had killed two policemen in the brief shootout during search operations two days ago. And that he had been handpicked by his chief, Abu Umar, a LeT commander in Pakistan, to carry out large-scale killings in Kashmir.
