Manjunath, Sharmila take day's honours

BANGALORE Aug. 6. Manjunath B. Godi and Sharmila Urs took the second day's honours in the State Junior athletics championship, organised jointly by the Banashankari Sports Club and Karnataka Sports Academy, with sterling performances at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here today.

Manjunath, the 19-year-old from DYSS, Bangalore, sailed over the hurdles in a time of 14.8 seconds, which incidentally erased his own mark of 14.9 seconds set last year. Manjunath however clocked the time twice last year as well, both at the national junior meet at Chennai and also at the South Zone event at Bangalore last year.

Sharmila Urs, the stocky girl from Mysore, heaved the hammer to a distance of 38.45 metres, which was way ahead of V. Lajwanti's previous state best of 34.48 metres.

Bindu Rani equalled H.M. Jyothi's 200 metres mark in the girls under-20, breasting the tape in 24.8 seconds. Yesterday Bindu had a personal best in the 400m.

Sachita Monnappa and Mallappa Talegeri upped their gold haul adding one more to their kitty. While Sachita claimed her third gold, Mallappa' added the 1500m gold to the 800m he won yesterday.

Young Cressina of Dakshina Kannada too claimed her second gold winning the 200m to add to the 400m she won on the opening day.
