Nepal court upholds Parliament dissolution

Kathmandu Aug. 6. In a victory for Sher Bahadur Deuba's caretaker Government, Nepal's Supreme Court today upheld its decision to dissolve Parliament and call for early elections in November. Rejecting a petition by 56 former lawmakers seeking reconvening of Parliament, a 11-member jury ruled that no precondition should be applicable to the Prime Minister's discretion to dissolve the House of Representatives.

The petition, supported by the former Premier, Girija Prasad Koirala, contended that the elections would be difficult to hold when the country is being ravaged by Maoist insurgency.
