12 injured in ship fire

COLOMBO Aug. 6. At least 12 crew members of a ship suffered severe burn injuries after the vessel caught fire at Colombo's main port today, a port official said. The ship, mv Rajendra Prasad, registered in Mumbai, was docked for repair when it caught fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The blaze, caused by sparks from welding machines, was later brought under control, he said. The injured crew members were all Indians.

They were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. Four of them were in a serious condition, the hospital director, Hector Weerasinghe, said. It was not immediately known what merchandise the ship carried before it was docked for repair. — AP
