Scam stalls LS, RS work

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi Aug. 9. For the sixth day running, the petrol pump allotment issue continued to affect the functioning of Parliament and both the Houses were adjourned today. Barring the passage of the Railways supplementary demand for grant for Railways — by a voice vote — in the Lok Sabha and the tabling of reports, no other business could be transacted.

Both the Houses observed a minute's silence: The Rajya Sabha for the martyrs of the Quit India movement and the Lok Sabha for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki victims.

In the Rajya Sabha, the Deputy Chairperson, Najma Heptulla, sought to know whether members would like to discuss serious issues such as drought. But with the Opposition insisting on the resignation of the Petroleum Minister, Ram Naik, and an inquiry into the allotments, the Chair adjourned the House for the day. The Lok Sabha witnessed a similar scenes before it was adjourned for the day.
