Order an inquiry

Sir, — This has reference to your Editorial "Petrol and patronage" (Aug. 7). It has again been demonstrated by the Vajpayee Government that good and honest governance is still alien to it.

The Prime Minister is desperately trying to get out of the muddle by resorting to wholesale cancellation of all the allotments made since January 2000. Does he think he can extricate himself from the depth into which his Government has fallen on account of the abysmal performance of Ram Naik? It does not behove the head of a responsible Government to leave unanswered a host of vital questions which have cropped up following the scam.

Thanks to the media, many a skeleton in the cupboards of our political bigwigs and administrators are being brought into the limelight every now and then. It is interesting to note the stoic silence of the leaders of the NDA constituents in a matter involving Rs. 3000 crores. To meet the ends of justice, honesty and fair play, an impartial and independent inquiry into the whole affair should be conducted.

C.C. Chandy,

Melukavumattom, Kerala
