Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the Editorial ``Promoting the military interest'' (Aug. 10). There is no provision (explicit or implied) in Pakistan's Constitution which makes it mandatory for all the Presidents to be members of the armed forces. There is no probability or surety that Gen. Musharraf's successor will be from the Army. What the General has done is to provide for a constitutional remedy to cater to a future contingent situation. In the absence of such an express provision (power to dismiss the Prime Minister), people will be unable to rid themselves of corrupt, despotic and so-called democratically elected representatives. Give the man his due; he is not pushing ahead any hidden (military) agenda. He is the best bet his country has under the circumstances. A.N.B. Pillai, Chennai
