Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your Editorial "Replay at Red Fort" (Aug. 16) sums up the brittle promises shrouded in rhetorical excellence exhibited at the annual ritual on the Red Fort. 1857 was the first war of independence, and 1947, the second. The priority now is for a third war of liberation freedom from the fetters of poverty, corruption, nepotism, scams and what not. Who will wage this historic war is the issue. In the past, we had politicians of integrity and freedom fighters without strings of favouritism attached to their utterances and actions, but today what we see is only a group of opportunists. The name of the party may differ but the spirit is the same. What a shame it is that freedom from `videshi' rule has ended up in `swadeshi' misrule and the Red Fort is made a spectator to this consummate hypocrisy. U.S. Iyer, Bangalore
