Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Collector of Ahmedabad reportedly told the President that the Government, as a policy, could not take up repairing places of worship. This must be taken up only by non-government organisations, he said, under notions of mistaken secularism. This was in the context of the restoration and repair of the 600 or so mosques and other places of worship damaged during the communal riots in Gujarat. These mosques were damaged due to failure of law and order and the inaction of the State Government, which should own responsibility for the loss sustained by the minority community. The State Government cannot absolve itself of the statutory obligation of compensating the loss of the minority community. The Public Works Department of Gujarat may, therefore, take up immediate reconstruction of the mosques and other places of worship and houses damaged during the riots. C.S. Subba Rao, Secunderabad
