Letters to the Editor
Sir, The sadness, agony and helplessness felt by the former President, K.R. Narayanan, on the Gujarat issue (Aug. 14), made sad reading. Here is a President, a former bureaucrat and Minister, who felt helpless while his subjects were being submitted to the worst communal carnage. Does the Constitution not provide enough power to him to come to the aid of people? His comments on his successor, Abdul Kalam's tour makes one wonder why he did not undertake the tour himself. P.S. Reddy, Hyderabad Sir, It was not just Mr. Narayanan who felt helpless, but every sensible Indian who watched the anti-social elements go on a rampage, killing women and children in Gujarat. However, I do not think Mr. Narayanan was so helpless. As demonstrated by Dr. Kalam, a simple visit by a high official brings people to their senses. I hope more politicians and public figures will follow Dr. Kalam's lead. B. Kamal, California
