Dengue strikes panic in Dhaka

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA Aug. 19. The Dengue fever, transmitted by the mosquito, Aedes Aegypti, has so far claimed the lives of 30 persons in Dhaka. Over 4,000 people are believed to be infected by the virus in the capital alone.

After a relatively quiet period of two years, dengue has made a comeback in the country. Officially, the number of deaths caused by the viral fever has been placed at 30 but unofficial estimates are higher. Sometimes called the "rich man's disease", dengue strikes in tropical regions and people living in urban areas appear to be the principal victims. Over the last fortnight alone, at least 30 persons have been getting admitted daily to various government and private hospitals in the capital.
