Shiv Sena activists arrested in Varanasi

VARANASI AUG. 19. Over 400 Shiv Sena activists, including the State chief, Vijay Tewari, were today arrested while they were proceeding to offer `jalabhishek' and prayers at Baba Kashi Vishwanath temple and Shringar Gauri, adjacent to Gyanvapi mosque, police sources said here.

The district administration had banned offering of prayers at Shringar Gauri stating that no new tradition would be allowed to start, but the Shiv Sena had given a call for offering prayers at the temple as well as en masse `jalabhishek' today on the auspicious occasion of the last Monday of the month of Shravana.

Over 277 Sena activists were arrested at Ravindrapuri, 58 at Sonarpura and 69 at Ramnagar, police said. Those arrested include, Mahant Lakshman Acharya of Dharam Singh Shiksha Mandal and the Mahanagar president, Arun Pathak.

Meanwhile, over three lakh devotees offered `jalabhishek' in Shiv temples of the city including world famous Baba Kashi Vishwanath Temple amidst tight security. Elaborate security arrangements were made in and around Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Gyanvapi mosque premises. — PTI
