Letters to the Editor
Sir, In the past the Centre gave a `clean chit' to the Narendra Modi Government for its "efficient handling" of the Gujarat riots. Though a majority of the public found fault with the Centre, it chose to ignore the criticism. Now the Centre has lost an opportunity to correct itself by not accepting the Election Commission's decision on Gujarat elections. The Prime Minister should have met the President soon after the latter's visit to Gujarat and discussed the situation to avoid the stand-off with the EC.
Somasekhar Prasad,
Sir, Now that the Election Commission has given its ruling on the elections in Gujarat, we can go back to the attitude, behaviour and outburst of the ruling elite. The Government spokesman called the Chief Election Commissioner a Congress agent. A former Law Minister advised him on legal terms. In any case the `coercive if veiled' threat did not seem to have worked. If our rulers carry on like this, one shudders to think to what extent they might go. The CEC has a record of not obeying an illegal order and also not grabbing a prize post by superseding a senior colleague. How we wish we had more service officers of such qualities, particularly in Gujarat during the crisis.
Murkot Ramunny,
