Mar Thoma Sabha Mandalam meet begins

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA Aug. 22. The supreme head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, Philipose Mar Chrisostum, has called upon his Church members to strive for the welfare and development of humanity as a whole.

Mar Chrisostum was inaugurating a three-day meeting of the Mar Thomas Sabha Mandalam at the Alexander Mar Thomas Auditorium in Thiruvalla this forenoon.

He said the very mission of the Church was the development of society as a whole. The Church members should take a lead role in combating the growing trend of communalism, which has become a cancer in modern world.

Addiction to liquor and drugs is another bane of modern society and this is more disastrous than a nuclear war. Erosion of human as well as social values and ethics, degradation and gradual collapse of the family system and financial injustice are the net results of the addiction menace. He called upon the mandalam members to give more importance to the ongoing de-addiction campaign of the Church.

Mar Chrisostum also stressed the need to give more attention to the problems faced by elder citizens.

Joseph Mar Irenius Suffragan Metropolitan, Zacharias Mar Theophilus, Yuyakim Mar Coorilos, Thomas Mar Themothios, Issac Mar Philexinos, Geevarghese Mar Athanasius and Geevarghese Mar Theodocius, all Metropolitans of the Church, the Church secretary, Fr P.J. Philip, and the trustee, Suresh Koshy, also addressed the meeting.

The meeting mourned the death of the Church members, Oommen Thalavady, Fr. C.P. Goorge, Grace Philip, George Joseph, S. Benjamin, P.M. Mathew, Fr. P.C. Joseph and Fr J. John.

The episcopal Golden Jubilee celebrations of Mar Chrisostum will be inaugurated by Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil at the Alexander Mar Thoma Auditorium tomorrow afternoon.
