In a statement issued to the press today, the Hurriyat spokesperson confirmed that a conditional decision to suspend the PC was taken at Sunday's joint meeting of the working committee, the general and the executive council. The condition was that the PC should publicly dissociate itself from the elections and disown the candidates now in the fray and were earlier the members of the party, besides taking an active part in all the programmes of Hurriyat, including its mass contact programme. In today's extended session, the PC representatives clarified that the party was not in any way taking part in the elections and that action had been taken against those contesting the elections. The senior PC leader, Pir Hafizullah Makhdoomi, told the meeting that the issue was discussed threadbare at a meeting of the PC and assured the Hurriyat that his party would abide by all the decisions of the conglomerate and would safeguard the principles of the late Abdul Gani Lone. With today's decision the PC has come out of a serious crisis and has also been recognised as the "real party" after two of its jailed leaders had "expelled'' Sajjad Lone and Bilal Lone, sons of Abdul Gani Lone, two days ago. On Sunday, Sajjad Lone had also announced the ratification of the expulsion of two of its rebel leaders, G.A. Gulzar and G.M. Hubbi, who on Saturday had raised a banner of revolt against the Lone brothers. All the 28 members of the working committee, along with around 400 supporters, were present at the Lone residence and reiterated support to both the sons.
