Moral bankruptcy

Sir, — The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's action in sending a letter to the President in 1999 supporting the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, for the Prime Ministership and her stand now clearly shows that politicians like Ms. Jayalalithaa should never be taken for their word. Indeed, a few politicians are making politics a crying shame by exhibiting their moral bankruptcy.

Ashish Kumar,

Lucknow, U.P.

Sir, — The recent bogey of foreign origin as a disqualification to hold the Prime Minister's office, raised against the Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi, by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, smacks of partisan politics. Nationality did not come in the way of serving the society for Mother Teresa, a non-Indian by birth. Besides, how far have our own `very Indian' politicians served our people. Ms. Jayalalithaa, during her earlier stint as CM, had shown that being born an Indian does not naturally translate to fruitful public service.

A public debate is needed on the eligibility of persons to high public offices, but only on issues of merit and character.

S. Raghuram,

Hyderabad

Sir, — Apropos Jayalalithaa's remarks on the unsuitability of Sonia Gandhi for the Prime Ministership, I would like to say that the unsuitability is not because of her foreign origin, but her total lack of qualifications for the job. Ms. Gandhi has neither the training, experience nor skills needed for the job. She has never done any kind of public service or distinguished herself in any kind of activity. Just marrying into a certain family is not suitable qualification for any job, let alone the Prime Minister's office. As Ms. Jayalalithaa has observed, it is a sign of vacuum in the Congress that they have to project a non-entity as a future Prime Minister.

T. Krishnan,

Bangalore
