Letters to the Editor
Sir, The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's scientific vision and background have always been a matter of pride for the country. His wisdom to seek, screen and nurture budding scientists in schools needs no special mention. The Director of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Mashelkar, also deserves appreciation for his idea of screening bright students. However, there is a need for restructuring the present day education up to the Plus Two level. The important areas where impetus is required are: more emphasis and weightage to project-based learning up to Plus Two, more agro-based, industry-based and research-based learning from Std. IX to XII, effective combination of spirituality and value education, special care and protection to the post-graduate teachers working at this level and total restructuring of the existing curriculum. To ignite minds, we need ``ignited teachers''. Jayant Dixit, Surat, Gujarat Sir, The teacher is the central stone of the school arch, with the Government and the management being the two columns supporting it. Teachers are doing a national service as they shape and mould the future citizens. Whether they serve in minority or non-minority, aided or unaided schools, they possess the same qualification, teach the same subjects, prepare the students for the same examination and value the same answer sheets. Hence, they must have the same conditions of service. Unless teachers are given constant assurance of justice, security and fair play, they cannot give their best. T.N. Vidyanandan, Madurai
