China for political means

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Sept. 5. With the clock ticking towards a decision by the U.S. to exercise or refrain from resorting to its military option against Saddam Hussein's Iraq at this time, China today counselled a political settlement of the crisis.

The main question at stake is the American move to consider extending the ongoing "war against terror'' to Iraq in the context of its perceived intransigence in refusing to give up its suspected programme of making weapons of mass destruction. Commenting on the situation at a press conference in Beijing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Kong Quan, said the issue should be resolved in accordance with the relevant U.N. resolutions and by political means.
