Letters to the Editor
Sir, In the news analysis "An unhealthy precedent" (Sept. 8), Gautaman Bhaskaran has quite rightly found fault with actress Manisha Koirala for seeking the help of the Shiv Sena chief, Bal Thackeray. It would be appropriate to mention here that not long ago when Nepal witnessed commotion, resulting in attacks on Indians, it is Mr. Thackeray who unilaterally announced a ban on films starring Ms. Koirala. It is a pity that she sought Mr. Thackeray's help even when the judiciary had taken cognisance of the issue. The film fraternity should wake up to situations of this nature and try to settle the issues among themselves and not allow them to spill over, particularly to politicians.
V.S. Jayaraman,
Sir, Ms. Koirala's meeting with Mr. Thackeray and the subsequent trouble caused by Shiv Sainiks at theatres where the controversial film was being screened leaves one wondering whether there is a judicial system and a law-enforcing authority in the country. Politicians and goons are equally responsible for the rot that has set in in Bollywood.
Y.K. Mir,
