2 militants killed in Karachi shootout

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Sept. 11. Two suspected Al-Qaeda militants and a girl were killed and five militants captured in Karachi today as police engaged the militants in a three-hour shootout that coincided with the first anniversary of September 11.The shootout began minutes after police raided a three-storey building and arrested two persons. Soon after the suspects were picked up, a hand grenade was thrown at them forcing them to call for reinforcements.

``There was a shootout which lasted over three hours in which six policemen were injured, one of them seriously,'' the city police chief told reporters.

Police had fired teargas and thousands of rounds at the building before the five gunmen, armed with Kalashnikovs, grenades and submachine guns, finally surrendered.

Reports said that none of the detained militants could speak Urdu. It is believed that one of the men shouted ``Allahu Akbar (God is great)'' as police took him away. There were other signs in the apartment to suggest that the detained men were on a `mission'.

Police recovered a laptop, some CDs and several books from the apartment. It appears the men had been living there for some time, but had been away for about a month before returning on Tuesday night.
