Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article "Village republics" by Andre Beteille (Sept. 3) made excellent reading. The plea is: let the Collectors and development officers stay at least for a couple of nights in a village. Wisdom will dawn on what the villages need, not toilet blocks on priority, but threshing and drying yards, mini-godowns, uninterrupted power supply, good drinking water and safe streets. A realistic down-to-earth planning by the villagers alone can save the villages for posterity.
A.S. Nagarajan,
