Nawaz Sharif withdraws papers

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Sept. 12. The Former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz Sharif, today formally withdrew his nomination papers to contest the October general election.

Mr. Sharif had announced his decision to stay out of the electoral contest in solidarity with another former Prime Minister and chairperson of the Pakistan People's Party, Benazir Bhutto. The election authorities' decision to accept Mr. Sharif's papers while rejecting those of Ms. Bhutto had surprised observers. Under the laws pronounced by the Musharraf Government in recent weeks, both the former Prime Ministers are not eligible to contest the polls as they had been convicted in corruption cases by courts.
