7-year jail term for Zardari

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Sept. 12. Asif Zardari, senator and husband of the former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, was tonight sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an accountability court in Rawalpindi, in what is known as the Steel Mills reference.

The court imposed a fine of Rs. 40 million and disqualified him for five years from holding any public office. He will have to undergo one more year of imprisonment in the case of non-payment of the fine.

Within hours, the Pakistan Peoples Party denounced the guilty verdict. In a statement today, a party spokesman said it rejected the verdict and would file an appeal in the appropriate court. "Never before in the history of the subcontinent was a verdict due for delivery in the morning delivered in the dead of the night.''
