Sangma may return to Meghalaya politics

GUWAHATI Sept. 16. The NCP leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno A. Sangma, said here today that he intended to contest the Assembly elections in Meghalaya next February and stake claim for chief ministership.

But he added that his return to Meghalaya politics was subject to the approval of his party, which was not yet willing to release a "national leader'' like him for State politics.

Also, though he was not personally keen on becoming Chief Minister again — he had held the post from 1988 to 1990 — the people of Meghalaya thought that as Chief Minister he would bring about stability in the State's politics.

He also said the central working committee of the NCP would meet in Shillong on October 19.

The party president, Sharad Pawar, would take part.

The meeting will decide the strategy for next year's Assembly elections in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura.

The party will contest all the 60 seats in Meghalaya, 15 in Nagaland and 10 in Tripura.

The meeting will also discuss in detail the negative impact of the liberalisation policy on the northeastern region, which has failed to attract either foreign or indigenous private investment.

Mr. Sangma said the BJP would fail to get a majority in the coming Gujarat elections and a hung Assembly would result.
