Verma for promotion of industrial relations

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 17. The Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, today called for a change in mind-set to facilitate promotion of harmonious industrial relations.

At a function to present the Vishwakarama Rashtriya Puraskar and National Safety Awards for 2000 to workers and managements of factories, industries and docks, Dr. Verma said the employers must share their profit with workers and also encourage their participation in management as this would help create a sense of belonging among them. The Labour Ministry was working on several welfare measures and for rationalisation of labour laws. This would not only simplify the laws but would also make their implementation easier.

Felicitating 58 workers with Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskars for their innovative suggestions for cost reduction, higher productivity, improved efficiency and import substitution, he said the number of awards would be increased. He also favoured sharing a part of the savings with workers.

Mr. Verma also presented 72 National Safety Awards to industrial undertakings for good safety performance based on lowest average frequency rate of accidents and for longest accident free period. Each award carried a shield for the winner and a cup for the runner and a merit certificate.

It was officially stated that the suggestions for 1990 saved more than Rs. 11.37 crores recurring and about Rs. 5.3 crores non-recurring while Rs. 23.25 lakhs were saved in foreign exchange on a recurring basis. This year, the prize money for different categories has been increased.
