Steps to bring out stamp on Chennai Museum

By T.Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI Sept. 17. The State Postal Circle has renewed its efforts to get released a commemorative stamp on the Chennai Government Museum.

It is learnt to have sent a fresh proposal to the Postal Directorate to bring out the stamp on the Museum, in response to a communication from New Delhi inviting suggestions for releasing stamps.

This development comes in the wake of the State Government's plan to hold a function to mark the completion of 150th year of the Museum, for which the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has consented to take part. Moreover, the Philately Advisory Committee, (which recommends to the Postal Department the issue of new stamps), is scheduled to meet early next month.

When the State Government requested the Postal Directorate last year to bring out a stamp, its plea was rejected on the ground that the request did not fall within the parameters set by the Postal Department on issue of stamps. The Directorate, however, stated in a letter to the State Government that a special cancellation cover could be released and for this, the Chief Postmaster General should be approached.

``One does not know how Tamil Nadu's case can be turned down when the guidelines of the department clearly provide for bringing out stamps on occasions such as 150th year of the Museum'', a seasoned philately expert wonders.

Five years ago, when the State Government organised the centenary celebration of the Connemara Public Library, the Postal authorities initially rejected the request for a stamp on the institution. But, subsequently, the public opinion forced the department to reconsider its stand and eventually, brought out a stamp on the Library.
