Scribe shot at, injured

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR SEPT. 17. Sofi Ghulam Mohammad, editor of Srinagar Times, a leading Urdu daily, was shot at and injured by militants along with his guard in Buchwara locality here this evening. Elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir, at least six people, including a People's Democratic Party (PDP) activist and a soldier were killed and over 20 injured since the first phase of polling for the Assembly elections came to an end on Monday evening.

Three militants entered the office-cum-residence of Mr. Mohammad and opened fire. "Three men came at around 6.30 p.m. and wanted to discuss something about the computers with my father,'' Mr. Mohammad's daughter told The Hindu. As soon as they entered his room, they opened fire. While he received bullet injuries on his hand, his bodyguard was shot in the legs. Both were rushed to hospital. They were out of danger, according to doctors. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.
