NTPC sets record in project execution

By Our Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM Sept. 18. The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) set a new record in project execution last week when it lit up the third 500 MW boiler, nine months ahead of schedule, at the country's largest thermal unit at Kaniha, 30 km from Talcher. ``The NTPC could achieve this in just 34 months against its own previous record of 36 months at its first stage of Simhadri Thermal Power Project, near Visakhapatnam,'' an NTPC spokesman said.

With the commissioning of the Rs. 324-crore boiler, the NTPC-Talcher got into action for switching on the third 500 MW generation unit. It has already commissioned two 500 MW units at Kaniha.

The full complement of 500 MW would be transmitted through the Talcher-Kolar high-voltage direct current line to its terminal near Bangalore for onward wheeling to the power-starved States of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala.
