Two NC workers shot dead

SRINAGAR SEPT. 18. Days ahead of the second phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir, militants made and abortive bid on the life of a National Conference candidate from Bandipora and shot dead two party workers today even as separate incidents claimed 17 lives in the State since last night, a police spokesman said.

Militants fired on the house of the NC candidate, Javed Hussain Shah, in Bandipora town last night injuring a civilian.

The ultras shot dead two NC workers, Ali Mohammad Dar and Ghulam Rasool Mir, here today. A lesser known outfit, Al-Arifeen, a shadow group of Lashker-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the killings.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces at Jumgund-Trehgam in Kupwara district, the spokesman said. One militant and two civilians were killed in an exchange of fire between security personnel and ultras in Kolinaar village of Baramulla.

A Hizb-ul Mujahideen militant, Tasaduq Hussain, was killed in a gunfight with security forces during search operations at Dadsar in Pulwama district last night. The bullet-riddled body of one civilian was found in Teetwal area of Anantnag district today.

In Jammu region, the militants ambushed an Army patrol in Atarmal forests in Rajouri killing a jawan and injuring two others.

Pak. shelling

Normal life was disrupted in Karna sector of Kupwara district in north Kashmir, when Pakistani troops targeted forward villages and posts with mortars and artillery shells, official sources said. — PTI
