Speaking at a function organised to mark the formation of the Shanti Sena (peace brigade), the disciple of Acharya Vinoba Bhave exhorted the shanti sainiks (peace soldiers) to carry aloft the torch of non-violence and work to locate and root out the causes of violence. Ms. Deshpande also unveiled an emblem for the brigade with a motto `care, share and peace' and said indelible belief in non-violence and prayer could achieve miracles, especially in riot-torn and war-torn zones. Narrating her own experience she maintained, ``if we prayed together, it creates the power of non-violence which can cure ills of society and unite hearts''. She described Mahatma Gandhi as the first shanti sainik and said his followers would face no harm in any adverse situations, and instead would be accorded best of treatment even in troubled zones. The Gandhian also exhorted peace soldiers and the public to rise above nationalism and strive to be citizens of the world. The Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya secretary, V. K. Sthanunathan, said Gandhiji's ideals alone would restore peace and harmony. Among others who participated in the function were Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, Judge, Madras High Court, the former TNCC president, Kumari Ananthan, the Rashtriya Seva Samithi general secretary, G. Muniratnam, and P. Maruthi of the GIFT.
