Lift sanctions against Iraq, says India

DUBAI SEPT. 22. India has called for lifting of sanctions against Iraq if it complies with the U.N. Security Council resolutions and allows U.N. weapons inspectors inside.

"We believe that sanctions should certainly be lifted if Iraq does comply with U.N. Weapons Inspections teams, and it has already shown a willingness to give them unrestricted access...we are waiting to see how the situation develops," R.M. Abhyankar, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, said.

Speaking at the Zayed Centre for Co-ordination and Follow-Up, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday, on "India's Approach to developments in Afghanistan, Gulf and West Asia", he said India enjoyed good relations with Iraq, which used to supply nearly 30 per cent of its crude oil requirements in the past till sanctions were imposed against it.
