Time of trial

Sir, — After the tragic aftermath of the Godhra carnage, in a final act of desperation, Pakistan is intent on driving a wedge between the two communities. We should exercise utmost restraint and not give in to the temptation of revenge and retribution at this stage of emotional high. India stands at the crossroads of the most trying times in history to prove its mettle. In spite of the gravest provocation, we owe it to ourselves to uphold the country's secular credentials, by facing the assault on our cherished values and by standing together without distinction of religion or politics. India cannot afford to fail at this hour.

H.R. Bapu Satyanarayana,
Mysore

Sir, — The terrorist attack on the temple seems to be a precursor to the events in store. The ``successful experiment in Gujarat'' to quote the VHP chief, Ashok Singhal, seems to be yielding dividends. Now we have another Kashmir in the making. It is unnecessary to blame Pakistan for fomenting trouble in our country. The endless greed for power of our political class creates situations for any enemy of India to further its cause.

The people should wake up to the threat from within, which is more dangerous than any external threat, because it threatens the very fabric of our multifaceted society. It is we who give the politicians power and it is our duty to take away power from those who misuse it for their own political gains.

Smrita Dubey,
Delhi
