This Day That Age
Charlie Chaplin came ashore on his native land with a big boyish smile on September 23 and heard the first greeting a shout of "Good old Charlie" from the Southampton workmen of the port. Facing batteries of newsreel cameras and microphones he confessed that he and his wife had been unable to sleep for excitement. As the Chaplin were going through the customs it was discovered that one of his four children, six-year-old Michael was missing. All the ship's loudspeakers broadcast an urgent call for him. But not until the moment when the family were due to board the boat train for Waterloo did he turn up Michael had been in the ship's gymnasium! Charlie showed no outward sign of anxiety about the controversy over his return to U.S.A. "I have not come over here to be in an international crisis or to make one", he said.
